Before you give up on finding great BBQ in Los Angeles, check out Smoke City Market in Sherman Oaks. This Texas-Style BBQ smokes it right, all over natural oak. With juicy fall-off-the-bone meat and sides that aim to please, this place is a winner in my mouth. Slow-smoked meat is the key to greatness and you can taste it in their moist melt-in-your-mouth brisket. My favorite is their Pastrami—it’s tender, full of flavor, and peppered to perfection. Wash it all down with a few beers and it’s pretty out-of-this-world.
Okay, let’s be serious. I’m a Kansas City girl who knows a thing or two about BBQ.
KC style is…
1. The meat: slow cooked and seasoned just right.
2. The sauce.
At Smoke City Market there are 2 sauces on every table: Standard Texas style BBQ sauce (pretty thick and a must on the flavorless chicken), and the ‘Hot Vinegar Sauce’, which I think added a great kick to the jalapeno cheddar sausage.
The meats are served family style on a tray with brown paper, and there’s loads of paper towels for those licked finger tips. Choosing which hot or cold sides is the 2nd hardest choice to make. With 11 to choose from, you can’t go wrong with the Red Chili and Creamy Potato Salad.
The dessert choice is easy, if you make it this far. Go with the Pecan Pie. Great flaky crust, gooey delicious pecans on top, and a sweet cold lip-smackin-good middle. Just like grandma makes.
If you’re feelin’ real hungry, champ, then the “Are you Texas Enough Challenge” may be the way to go. I’ll be back for sure and I’m bringing a bigger-than-a-Texas-belt-buckle appetite.
