It’s that street with the suspended letters spelling out Venice.

Great décor that gave a relaxed, yet polished vibe. It’s a very open space with mostly outdoor seating, yet you feel like you’re inside and not at Venice Beach proper. They have a wide variety of beer and wine available. The menu boasts a lot of delicious offerings. We started with Grilled Asparagus and Risotto Balls.

Every bite of the Grilled Asparagus was savory and full of complimentary flavors. I could eat this for breakfast! It was light and a great starter. It was a little tricky to split between a few people, but we made it work.

The Risotto Balls consist of beef Bolognese stuffed in a shell of risotto. These were absolutely incredible and a little heavier than I expected, but well worth it. I would definitely come back for this dish.

For my entrée, I ordered the Pea Ravioli. The bowl is deeper than it looks. The ravioli was filled with lightly puréed peas, which was light and not too strong. It was just right. The sauce it came in was a little heavy for me and the Parmesan cheese was a little much as well, but the dish was still yummy. There are definitely other items on the menu I would come back to try.

Truly, I must give compliments to the Chef as the entire meal was just amazing. Great food, great service, and a great atmosphere. This is a fantastic place for dinner, lunch, or stopping by for a drink.

I like BottleRock in Culver City. But I can easily weave home from there, so its proximity appeals to my affection. I posed the question to Twitter.

Foodie's #BiteFlite. Craft Beer, Tasty Sliders, Perfect Desserts

Did you make it out to L.A. Foodie’s #BiteFlight event on April 27? No? Saywha? Why not? It was totally amazing. (You are coming to the next one, right?)

Let’s take a look at the amazing beers, burgers, desserts, and other goodies that were on hand at our crazy-cool venue, Bar & Garden, the hip new tasting room/liquor store in Culver City’s Arts District. (If you haven’t been, get over there and check it out—seriously. The owners know their booze, and their selection is uh-maz-ing.)

The #BiteFlight party got rolling at 6 p.m. and didn’t slow down for a single minute of the three-hour event.

#BiteFlite attendees were treated to tastings of four unique brews

Allagash Tripel Ale

Brouwerij West Mør Mør

Uinta Hop Notch IPA

Boulevard Brewing Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale

We’d be hard-pressed to name a favorite out of the group—it was quite a diverse selection. But suffice it to say, they were all intoxicatingly tasty. And seeing as how #BiteFlight was L.A. Foodie’s first foray into a formal beer tasting, it gave us the opportunity to roll out our newest game with attendees: How Bitter Is Your Beer? Check out the fun:

A huge shout-out to our pals at Vagabond Grillyard, who were on hand all night serving up amazing sliders for guests. These guys take their burgers AND their beers quite seriously—so much so that they helped us make sure their each of their menu items was perfectly paired with the evening’s brews:

Signature Burger: Grass-fed dry-aged beef, homemade garlic cilantro aioli, sweet onion marmalade, sharp cheddar, wild baby arugula, served on a brioche bun. (Paired with Allagash Tripel Ale)

Bacon Bleu: Grass-fed dry-aged beef, homemade garlic aioli, caramelized onions, bleu cheese, thick-cut applewood smoked bacon, wild baby arugula, served on a brioche bun. (Paired with Brouwerij West Mør Mør)

Pulled Pork: 12-hour roasted pork shoulder, bacon, sriracha poppyseed coleslaw, served on a Portuguese bun. (Paired with Uinta Hop Notch IPA)

Classic Grilled Cheese: Your choice of sharp yellow cheddar or American cheese melted between brioche toast. (Paired with Boulevard Brewing Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale)

And what’s the point of beers and burgers without a sweet finish? No point. No point at all. So thankfully, we had our amazing dessert sponsor, Velvet Rope Bake Shop, set up to dish out delectable cookies and cake truffles all night long. The photos, as pretty as they are, really can’t do these desserts justice. The cake truffles came in both classic and clever flavors, from red velvet to Guinness beer. And then, just when you were lulled into a comfortable sugar coma, they’d hit you with something like a rocky road cookie with essence of ghost pepper. (WHAT? Oooo. Yeah. It’s good. Real good.)

“Whew. That’s a lot of awesome,” you might be saying at this point. But it didn’t stop there. Just like any good party organized by an 11-year-old (or, in this case, people with the maturity of 11-year-olds), there was an amazing grab bag of party favors! All guests took home the following:

A batch of cookies from Velvet Rope Bake Shop (Have we mentioned how awesome these guys are?)

A super-kewl Yelp can koozie

A $20 Uber taxi credit

A sample of Cow Wow cereal milk

A bag of HannahMax’s Cookie Chips

Not content to keep the walls plain, The Lethargic Artist (AKA Patrick McGilligan), was showing paintings and drawings from his unique collection of curiously beautiful robots, hookers, monsters, and creeps. MgGilligan is a talented artist with a unique style. All art on display was for sale, and nothing will exceeded $100.

Jealous yet? You should be. So we hope to see you at our next event! For early invitations to future events, sign up for L.A. Foodie’s newsletter in the left side bar of this website or at <a href="http://lafoodie.us6.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=feb05124b2&id=913ce8e5bc!" title="L.A. Sleek with vintage inspired décor, this restaurant boasts a buzzing atmosphere with a well-thought out menu.

Littered with cozy booths and modern tables, this is a good place for dinner or drinks. You can tell a lot of time went into the menu; it’s rather short, but you can tell the chef has chosen carefully.

For starters, I have to highly recommend their Brussels sprouts. Fresh produce roasted to sweet perfection with feta cheese on top is just so tasty. I usually don’t find appetizers that wow me, but this one definitely does every time.

There are still a few dishes I’d like to try on this menu. I must suggest their sea bass dish. I forgot to take a picture of it—it just looked so good I completely forgot about my camera. But, I didn’t forget my camera when it came to this next dish: the grilled cheese with cheddar, caramelized apples, and a bed of greens.

It is such a unique take on grilled cheese with the addition of the apples and the crispness of the bread. It was a little messy to eat, but it was well worth it. Be warned, the grilled cheese was a little too greasy for me. Also, their drink menu has a great selection and fun cocktails (both in name and in ingredients).

Overall, The Corner Door in Culver City is a nice place to meet someone for drinks or have a lovely dinner out.

Whether you’ve already been to Paris or just want to imagine yourself eating French comfort foods at a cozy cafe in the land of romance, Meet in Paris in downtown Culver City can take your tastebuds on an adventure without a plane ticket. They invited us to come down and see if they could change our mind about mussels…

Even the warm, crusty, yet soft-on-the-inside bread was delicious—we had about four little loaves between the two of us.

We started out with three Hors D’oeuvres: Tomato Tarte Tatin, Escargots à l’Ail, and Dungeness Crab Cakes.

The crab cakes were surprisingly served with a drizzle of spicy marinara sauce. We agreed we hadn’t ever eaten crab cakes this way but it does make them taste a little like mozzarella sticks—in a good way.

The Tomato Tarte Tatin is as much a sculpture as it is a scrumptious, savory, yet sweet starter. Tomato confit, bosc pears, and bleu cheese all stacked on top of a puff pastry. The flavors compliment each other in a really nice way.

The favorite among the three, though, goes to the Escargots à l’Ail, The snail meat is drenched in a garlic and parsley butter that just seems to melt in your mouth. Without trying anything else we agreed that these alone are worth coming back for.

Now, I have to admit, going into this place, we were not very into mussels, and Meet In Paris is REALLY into mussels. They serve about 500lbs of PEI mussels a week with their 16 different varieties of mussel entrees.

We tasted the “Meet in Paris”, Dijonnaise, Bisque, and Paella varieties. After tasting the Bisque, we changed our minds about mussels. We kept dipping the bread in the rich lobster bisque (with white wine, brandy, tomato confit, and cream) while slurping on the tender shellfish. Each bowl had something we really liked and all the mussels were really well done, not rubbery at all. The Meet in Paris had a wonderful smokey flavor and big juicy chunks of bacon. The Dijonnaise is for the mustard lovers—the Dijion mustard sauce pairs really well. The Paella was our least favorite, but even then, it was still pretty tasty.

Of course, any good Moules-Frites needs some quality Frites. These didn’t disappoint and were perfect for dipping in that lobster bisque (or any of the sauces, really, but DAMN that bisque…)

We ended the night with two desserts. The Crème Brûlée was fine, but our favorite was the Ménage à Trois: three profiteroles filled with vanilla ice cream topped with a dark homemade chocolate sauce and roasted almonds. After all the savory it was the perfect sweet, and a great ending to our amazing meal.

This is a lovely restaurant for a nice dinner date. It could be a tad pricey, but they’ve got some solid weekly specials that might be worth taking advantage of. Even if you dislike mussels, they may change your mind just like they did ours. We will for sure meet again, Meet in Paris.

Monday: 30% off on all mussel dishes, all beers half off

Tuesday/wednesday: All you can eat Mussels for $26.95

Sunday: Brunch, Bottomless mimosas $16.95

Located at 9727 Culver Blvd., Meet in Paris is open seven days a week. Reservations are available by calling 310-815-822

Covina Tasty Freeze offers a midwestern favorite

It has been my experience that in Los Angeles, soft serve is treated like the red-headed stepchild of the ice cream family. Seriously, think about the last time you’ve seen a place selling soft serve.

Well, as a born and raised Midwesterner, I find this unacceptable, and even more so, there’s no soft serve in the city that ‘dips’ their cones. For those unfamiliar with this concept, it’s soft serve that is dipped into a bucket of hot chocolate sauce (or butterscotch, caramel….any flavored sauce) that then freezes onto the ice cream forming a hard crust. It took me a while, but I finally found Covina Tasty Freeze that offers chocolate, butterscotch and cherry dipped cones. Below is the butterscotch.

The waffle cone is quite large, and has a big vanilla twirl coming out of the top. The butterscotch shell has a deep orange color with splotches of white poking through. The crust is thick, crunchy and tastes like butterscotch hard candy. You know, those muted yellow round candies that every grandma has on their coffee table. The vanilla soft serve tastes pretty standard, but if you’re used to non-fat vanilla frozen yogurt this will taste pretty rich.

The cherry dipped cone has a brick red color and a semi-waxy shell that is softer than the butterscotch. It’s intensly sweet, and has that over-the-top artificially cherry flavor similar to a Jolly Rancher. Don’t take this as a dig though, because it’s perfect for what it is. You’ll notice I didn’t do any chocolate ice cream on my visit. This is because I find vanilla lends itself much better to these flavored dips. However if you’re the kind of person that absolutely has to have chocolate ice cream, the cherry dip is the flavor to go with.

So, next time you hear someone say ‘soft serve ice cream is SOOOO pedestrian’ tell that person to shut up and try a dipped cone over at Covina Tasty Freeze. If we work together we can help stop food stereotyping.

Nothing warms my heart more than seafood—especially a good moist crab cake. This sucker is seasoned to perfection and laid upon a slather of creamy remoulade with some yummy citrus and micro greens for presentation. How fabulous does that look? Well, it tastes just as fab.

How about this hidden gem:

Nothing is more fabulous than an amazingly placed cheese plate. One that has the right mix of bitters and savory cheese is right up my alley. It is precisely the perfect thing to enjoy as an app with Sunday Funday cocktails and filling enough for two or three to share.

On to the main course, or courses in this case. Fatty’s just opened about six months ago and they are right off La Cienega. My friend refers to it as “The New Abbey,” because it is completely open-air and on the weekends it pops off like a club/bar.

They have several different pizzas that are bomb dot com, and we opted for a healthy choice in the roasted veggie pizza. BAM this is what we got:

The crust was cooked perfectly and it’s flatbread so it’s not terribly filled with carbs. Veggies and pesto…yummy heaven.

Also, these people are frying up one of the best chicken sandwiches I’ve had in my life. JUST LOOK AT THIS:

YUMMMMMM!!!! Isn’t that just mind-blowing?

We loved this joint. Here are some quick notes: Happy Hour runs daily from 12–7pm, with food specials 10pm–12am. They also have 1/2-priced burgers on Monday, 1/2-priced pizzas on Tuesday, and lovely wine sprecials on Wednesday. Woo hoo! Enjoy.

DROP EVERYTHING! And think about this:

(Photo credit: Public School 310 Facebook page)

SRIRACHA…BACON…. CHEDDAR… FRIED! BOOM!

Instant gratification. I don’t quite know what you’ve been doing without sriracha on EVERYTHING, but I know exactly what I’ve been doing—embracing it. And Public School 310 is doing the same with this easy app. So make sure you get right to these. Although, I wish there were more than just five. But that’s my fat cells yelling at me.

They aren’t the only thing ‘yelling’ at this trendy Culver City gastropub that’s been around for about 6 months now. I found it quite difficult to have a conversation without speaking louder than usual. So keep that in mind. But, honestly…the food was so damn good that quite frankly, I needed to just shut the hell up and eat anyway.

For dinner I enjoyed the Dragoons Irish Stout Short Rib (horseradish yukon mash and carmalized onion au jus):

This was a phenomenal choice, although it is very filling. I enjoyed every savory bit of it. It was perfectly seasoned and juicy. They obviously marinated the hell out of it, which gave it that tender, juicy, slow-cooked texture that you’ll see pictured below:

That meat literally just fell apart when I stuck my fork into it. Something you definitely look for in short rib and something that NEEDS TO HAPPEN IN LIFE WITH ANY SORT OF MEAT.

If you’re in a wee-bit lighter mood, another entree option I tried that I found completely exceptional was the fish and chips. Although very simplistic, it was quite tasty.

I tried a few speciality drinks but the best is going to have to be the Cucumber Mule. Give it a swirl and don’t forget to do your homework and drink responsibly, because they’re STRONG.

DON’T LEAVE without trying dessert—these guys make a punishing one too. Drop your pencils and pens and start writing your lines on the chalkboard because you’re in trouble:

Chocolate. Stout. Broooooowwnnnnieeee!!!! WEEEEEEEHAWWWW! This sucker is fresh out of the oven and warm topped with caramel, a hint of chile and some lovely vanilla ice cream. You’ll like this one. Trust me!

One final note about this gastropub. The manager was VERY active. He was checking every plate as it came out, sending it back for any error he saw. I’ve always thought that an active manager is key to a successful restaurant (as my late Uncle always told me—shout out to Uncle Gerald!). These folks are cooking up solid eats and decent drinks. With a sickening 4–7 happy hour during the week. Give it a shot. Make a reservation as it seemed to be a bit busy for dinner—that may cut your wait time down. Enjoy these small notes: Plates are $15–30. Apps are $6–10. Cocktails are $10–15 (on average—some beer options are cheaper). Public School 310 place is located in downtown Culver City, a few steps away from all the other cool, hip bars down there. Let ‘em know we sent ya.

People at Chakra are proud of their restaurant, and rightfully so. Halal-prepared dishes are beautifully presented using super-fresh ingredients. Combine that with a great ambiance, and this place is a winner. I was treated to a veritable feast of deliciousness to enjoy.

The evening began with my Taj Mahal beer and yummy Paapad, presented with four different kinds of chutney. It was quickly followed by the Samosa Trio, which featured perfectly prepared, crispy but not too crispy, delicious mushroom and potato samosas, accompanied by a few different kinds of chutney.

Next to come out was the Jhinga Anar: delicious, large, and plump pomegranate shrimp on a bed of delicious spinach poriyal. This was really tasty, but the best was yet to come!

Following those delicious crustaceans was one of my favorite dishes: Chicken Tikka Masala with Basmati rice. The chicken was tender and in an outrageously delicious and creamy Makhni sauce. At the same time, some garlic naan and raita (to cleanse the palate) were served.

Lasooni Champen—Tandoori lamb on a bed of garlic spinach—was also served. Once again, the meat was tender and excellently prepared. This was really, really tasty.

I was treated to a delicious pistachio-flavored frozen dessert: Cassate Kulfi. It had a dense, rich texture and was made there at the restaurant. It was served with fresh strawberries, which complimented it nicely. Quite a treat!

I will say that some of these dishes, while DELICIOUS, are not necessarily as spicy as they might be if you were eating them say, in India. I’ve had Chicken Tikka Masala that will melt your face off. Here, it was pretty mild. In all fairness, I did not indicate to them at all that I like things spicy, and it is surely served this way to appeal to a broader palate of American diners, most of whom don’t handle the fire so well. I’m willing to wager $1 billion of Bill Gates’ money that you could ask them to spice it up for you, and they would be happy to oblige.

All in all, you should definitely get out here and try this place if you haven’t already! I’m going back for sure! The staff is super-friendly, and the food is excellent. You won’t be disappointed.

We had the pleasure of making it down to Redondo Beach for brunch to test out the new make your own Bloody Mary Bar at BALEENkitchen. I mean honestly, what else needs to be said? If you are a fan of Bloody Marys, this alone is reason to come and boozy brunch it up. The bar was kind of insane. They had different kinds of infused vodka, and tons of spices, sauces, and garnishes. AND they had like 20 different kinds of hot sauces! It’s you playing Bloody Mary bartender, so you can go Plain Jane with your recipe or get creative and make a spicy fireball. I’ll just say as a word of caution, don’t add Tabasco AND cayenne pepper to yours. As for garnishments, I highly recommend putting in a stalk of celery and a strip of bacon. Yes, they have STRIPS OF BACON as garnishment!

As for the brunchy part of boozy brunch, I ordered the Steak & Eggs. The steak was a hangar steak, and thankfully wasn’t overcooked. If I’m having steak and eggs, I like my steak tender, which can be tricky with hangar steak. The chimichurri was a nice touch, and just what the steak doctor ordered. The potatoes that came on the side were delicious.

Lisa had their famous Baleen Burger. She says:

“My first thought was, “how do i put my mouth around this thing?” It came with a side of fries, and they were fine as far as fries go but clearly the burger is main attraction on this plate. This giant burger had all the greats: thick juice patty, perfect tomato, crispy bacon, guacamole, crispy onions, and cheddar cheese. It was very delicious, but the deliciousness soon fell apart in a sloppy mess. Don’t get me wrong, I finished it but I did so with a fork. Would I recommend this burger? Yes, but if you’re trying to impress your dinner date and keep it neat and classy, stay clear.”

Ben ordered the Cornmeal Pancakes with lemon, ricotta and blueberries. His verdict:

“Little known fact - I have mild hypoglycemia. I figured this out in high school when, a few hours after downing a pile of pancakes, I went into sugar shock. So I don’t normally order pancakes. But these are made of cornmeal, so I thought I’d give them a try.

They were pretty good, and I polished off the whole plate. They were more savory than your normal pancake and the cornmeal added a coarser texture, though next time I’d love to try something else.

On the side I ordered Bacon Potato Hash. Crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, all fried up with some nice thick bacon. If that sounds good to you this is a must!”

We really enjoyed this brunch. It’s a great atmosphere, and the restaurant is overlooking the marina. On a sunny day it’s a great place to chill and enjoy your brunch and the view of the boats cruising in and out. Afterwards, you can walk over to the pier and enjoy the awesome old school arcade. If you’re lucky you’ll get enough tickets to claim a ‘Mystery Box’ prize. And if you’re REALLY lucky, you’ll win a cassette (that’s right, a cassette) of Englebert’s album “After Dark.” Cassettes be making a comeback, y’all. I’m calling it.
