30:SECONDmendations, Ka’u Specialty, Inc. Coffee

Here is your review of Ka’u Specialty, Inc. Honey Dark Roast Coffee in less than 30 seconds. Ben says it’s good either hot or cold brewed, so give it a try!

WE RECOMMEND: Try it with a Toddy (cold brew) maker. That way, you’ll have concentrate on hand for days!

PROS: Has a boldness and sweetness that translate well to either a tasty cold or hot beverage.

CONS: It comes from Hawaii, and it’s only available online (but you only shop online anyway, right?).

This is a damn fine cup of coffee.

Drew & Ben Talk About Fair Food on KFI 640 AM

UPDATE! Listen to the whole show, on-demand, right here. Fast forward to 54:30 for direct access to LA Foodie goodness.

I hope that the AM radio waves are holding onto their butts because today at 3:30 PM, Ben & I (Drew) will again venture outside the cozy confines of social media and into the open waters of broadcast media. We will be joining Neil Saavedra on his show, The Fork Report, which airs Saturdays (TODAY!) from 2PM - 4PM on KFI 640 AM in Los Angeles. Since we had so much fun the last time we appeared on the show, we’re extra-geeked to return for a serious academic discussion of the totally insane fair food that we encountered at this year’s LA County Fair. Foods like this Garlic Corn Dog Pizza:

LA Foodie On The Local News

Drew and Ben warmed up the 2012 LA County Fair with some local news crews this morning. It was a tiring day, but the whole LA Foodie crew is back home resting up for tomorrow, when we’ll head back to Pomona to shoot a ton of video content for LA Foodie. If our coverage of the LA County Fair isn’t the most comprehensive (and it probably won’t be), it will definitely be the most awesome.

It will be the most awesome, partly, because this happened:

But mostly because this happened:

Top 10 LA Hot Dogs: The Slaw Dogs #2

Pretend for a moment that the humble hot dog is worthy of being topped with the finest ingredients available. Now you’re in the same headspace as The Slaw Dogs owner, Ray Byrne.

The Slaw Dogs in Pasadena is taking the hot dog where Umami took the burger — but they’re doing it much better. Combinations of ingredients are truly creative (and not just weird). And the flavors WORK.

This video clip, featuring The Slaw Dogs in Pasadena, CA (our #2 best hot dog joint in LA) is the 2nd in a series of 5 videos. The final video (coming soon) will reveal LA Foodie’s pick for the #1 hot dog in LA.

In the meantime, please enjoy our video coverage of Skooby’s Hot Dogs in Hollywood, CA (our #3 best hot dog spot in Los Angeles).

Top 10 LA Hot Dogs: Skooby’s #3

Skooby’s Hot Dogs on Hollywood Boulevard might look like a tourist trap, but unlike Pink’s, the hot dogs here are actually really good. Ben & Drew met with owner John Hooper  to discuss how these tasty dogs are made. Then John served-up a smorgasbord of Skooby’s snacks.

This clip, featuring Skooby’s (our #3 best hot dog joint in LA) is the first in a series of 5 videos. The final video will reveal LA Foodie’s pick for the #1 hot dog in LA.

Coachella 2012 Eat It/Screw It Guide!

Coachella. The mere mention of the word brings to mind incredible live music, throngs of dancing half-naked hippies, and rapping ghosts. But what, you ask, should I eat while I brave the hot desert sun (or chilly desert nights)? Fear not, for Lisa and I scoped out the joint last weekend and now we’ve got you covered with our handy-dandy Coachella Eat It/Screw It Guide!

I LOVE SPICY PIE PIZZA - SCREW IT!

"I Love Spicy Pie" pizza

There’s nothing wrong with this pizza. It’s a solid NY-style slice, but it’s absolutely nothing special. The reason I say screw it, though, is why have average pizza when you could have great pizza?…

PIE FOR THE PEOPLE - EAT IT!

Untitled

I didn’t think we were going to find actual good food at the festival until we happened to try a slice of these guys’ David Bowie pizza. Bacon, carmelized onions, mozzarella, pineapple, jalapenos, and plum sauce… Run over to the beer garden outside the crazy dance tent and grab one before everyone else figures out how tasty this place is! And hell, if you happen to be in Joshua Tree, go check out their permanent spot

Until then, check out this piping-hot video of Ben and Lisa feeding hungry people at Coachella. It’s a game show: guess what’s on the pizza that you just put in your mouth. Go!
